Is Laptop Rental a Good Business?

Computers are becoming a necessity for running businesses nowadays. Likewise, individuals need PCs for various reasons, be it for school work, internet browsing, social media, or for work. The need for computers at present is undeniable. It’s understandable why business-minded individuals would consider it as a prospect for starting a business.

A laptop rental business can take advantage of the growing demand for personal computers. It serves a need that may no longer be perceived as viable in the age of powerful and multifunctional smartphones, tablets, and other mobile computing devices. However, is this type of business feasible still, and in the foreseeable years to come?

Declining PC sales

One of the essential points businessmen would probably be thinking about when considering a laptop rental business is the fact that PC sales have been decreasing over the years. According to numbers from Statista, global PC sales as of the third quarter of 2018 only reached a little over 62 million. This is considerably lower than the sales volumes in 2010 through 2015. If people are no longer that interested in buying laptops, does it make sense offering laptops for rent?

On the contrary, this decrease in computer sales is not something that should discourage entrepreneurs. Even though the figures are dropping, it does not mean that personal computers have become obsolete. It’s also unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future. Business and individual users of the standard computing devices (desktops and laptops) will continue existing for many more years. Smartphones and tablet computers are unlikely to supplant computers with full-size displays when it comes to important tasks such as accounting, human resource management, marketing, and online collaboration. Working with a keyboard and mouse is still the most efficient setup.

Offering something advantageous to users

Renting out laptops is a good business option mainly because businesses and other users of personal computers are seeing the advantages of equipment rental. There are many instances when it’s better to rent than to buy. It does not make sense spending on brand new equipment that is only needed for a few occasions. Why buy new computers when they are only going to be used for a few events? Companies that hold conferences, exhibits, or expositions, for example, don’t need new laptops. It would be considerably cheaper to rent them whenever they are necessary.

Aside from the cost benefit, renting personal computers is also advantageous since it eliminates the need for maintenance and warehousing. With rented equipment, there’s no need to worry about software updates and hardware upgrades. Additionally, by renting laptops, the burden of transporting and properly handling the devices is relegated to the company renting out the units. There are no additional costs for transportation and setup.

A laptop rental business is an excellent idea for a startup. The dropping global sales figures for personal computers isn’t an adverse trend for this kind of business. Renting out laptops for a business is a feasible option with a lot of opportunities for growth. You just have to make sure that you manage it well.
