FirstClass® Palm Sync 8.006 Release Notes

Description
FirstClass supports Palm Computing connected organizers (organizers, handhelds, or devices), and other handheld devices running Palm OS 3.1  and higher, and using Palm Desktop 4.1 and higher on Windows, Mac OS, and Mac OS X.
Using the Palm HotSync® Manager 4.0 and higher (Windows), Palm HotSync® Manager 3.0 and higher (Mac OS and Mac OS X), and FirstClass Palm conduits you can bi-directionally synchronize your contact entries and calendar entries, mail, tasks, and memos between your Palm connected organizer and your FirstClass server. Synchronization can be done from any Windows, Mac OS, or Mac OS X computer that has the Palm Desktop organizer software and FirstClass Palm Sync installed. You must install the Palm Desktop software on your computer before you can install the FirstClass Palm conduits.

Installation

1) Download attached file into a directory of your choice.
2) Double click it and follow the onscreen instructions.
3) The installer asks "PalmOne ships new Personal Information Management applications with their new devices. (Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and Memos). Does your Palm device contain these applications?".  If you select "Yes", the conduits will be installed to synchronize with the new application.  A device with older Palm PIM applications will not be able to sync through this desktop machine.  Likewise, if you select "No" and install for the older PIM applications, the FirstClass conduits will only sync the shadow databases of the new PalmOne devices.  The new fields found in the new applications will not be synchronized.

If you are using one of the newer PalmOne devices (Zire 31, Zire 72, Tungsten E, Tungsten, T3, Tungsten T5, Treo 650 )  with the new Contacts application then you should select the PalmOne Contacts form in your FirstClass Preferences.

Note: The Mac OS X installer may not install the FCSetup.prc file properly.  If this happens you will need to manually install the program to your Palm device.  The FCSetup.prc will be copied to /Users/Documents/<your mac username>/Palm/Users folder.  Double-clicking on FCSetup.prc should bring up the Palm Quick install.

Using the Palm HotSync® Manager 4.0 or higher (Windows), Palm HotSync® Manager 3.0 or higher (Mac OS and Mac OS X), you can bi-directionally synchronize your address entries and calendar entries, mail, to do list, and memo pad between your Palm connected organizer and your FirstClass server. Synchronization can be done from any Windows, Mac OS, or Mac OS X computer that has the Palm Desktop organizer software and FirstClass Palm Sync installed.

Major features

• Upgraded logging.  Added device identification.
• Supports the new FirstClass 8.0 encryption scheme.
• The installers have been upgraded to support the Tungsten T5, Treo 650 and HotSync 6.01.
• Added feature to retain FirstClass fields not synched to Palm.
• Support for PalmOne's new applications, Calendar, Contacts, Memos and Tasks.
(found on Tungsten T3, Tungsten T5, Treo 650, Tungsten E, Zire 21, Zire 72, etc.)

Contacts
Support Birthday, new Addresses (Business, Home & Other), Instant Messaging (M1, IM2), 7 phones/emails, website, 9 custom fields.
Picture on T5 is not synched from Palm to FirstClass.

A new contact form has been included.  This version supports the new fields of the PalmOne Contacts application.  Select the Palm form as your default Contact form using Preferences.
If the Palm has more than one address of the same type (i.e.; two work addresses)  only one will be mapped to that type on FC, the other will be mapped to one of the other types.

Calendar
Support for location, No Timed Events, Categories, Colors from Palm categories will be used if not already set on FC.
Events can span two days.  Events longer than 24 hours will be shortened to 23 hours and 59 minutes.  This is a limitation of the Palm.  For longer events please make the event a daily repeat.

Tasks
Alarm supported
Completed Date supported (Note it does not appear on the Palm but is still recorded in the database)
If a new task is synched from the Palm, a color will be set based on it's priority.
Retain old Palm priority.  When writing from FC to Palm old Palm priority will be retained if not changed on FC.
If no color set on FC, the Conduit will set a color based on priority.
Repeat cannot be supported because there are no repeats in FirstClass tasks.

Memos
Memos can now be 32k in size.

All Conduits
Handheld overwrites Desktop has been changed to always Synchronize.  We have seen Synchronize arbitrarily changed to HHtoPC (Handheld overwrites PC) by HotSync and as a result records have been lost from FirstClass.

FCSetup
Server field now supports up to 60 characters.
Added encryption popup list.  You can now select the encryption method similar to the client. (Default, Off, Fast, Secure).  As a result all conduits can log into the FCServer with CAST128.
Password is now entered using the standard Palm "Assigned", "Unassigned" method with an additional popup dialog box for password entry.

Fixes since last release

Calendar: No Time events now sync.
•  Calendar: Any change to a part of a broken repeated event is not duplicating second chunk any more.
•  Calendar: Only Private Sensitivity on FC sets the Palm Private flag now.  Company, Personal and Normal will not.
•  Calendar: Breaking the chain of events does not remove participants, resources, location.
•  No time repeated events with no end date no longer sync to FirstClass as continuing forever and disappear after second sync.
Tasks: Alarm is now synching from FC to Palm.  Note the Reminder translation is limited the Palm only supports a max of 99 days.  FC Reminders will be rounded down to 5 minute intervals.
Tasks: Retains start date time set on FC even after Palm Event changed and FC event updated.
ToDo List: Old ToDo List now uses CalculateRealDifference to adjust time by 5 hours.
• Date Book: Splitting an unending event lost the tail of the event.  The Repeat Until end time of last part of broken event was not set correctly.
•  Contacts: (PalmOne Tungsten T3) when a contact record was modified on FirstClass and then synched to Palm, the following error occurred: "DataMgr.c, Line:7399, DmWrite: DmWriteCheck failed" when changes were then made to that contact on the PalmOne T3.
Memos: Styledata is now cleared from FC when synching changes from a Palm memo back to FirstClass.
•  Memo name was not syncing from FC envelope if the first line of the doc was empty.
• FCSetup: Multi-select delete didn't work for password field. Changed the way the password is entered. (See new features)
•  Custom 4, Pager and Title fields were not syncing on Win / TE

Known Issues

• The mail conduit does not support VersaMail at this time.  IMAP or POP should be used instead.
• Memos larger than max allowable size (32K Memos app, 4K Memo Pad app) are not synced (just ignored).
• While synchronizing with a Treo 300, HotSync may crash while running the FirstClass Date Book. There is no current workaround for this problem.
• Mark/Space's Missing Sync has not been tested with these conduits.
• Contacts subtree synching does not work yet.
